Garrett McNamara teams up with Mercedes-Benz

Comment Up

When you hear the name Mercedes you automatically think "quality."

Mercedes-Benz's team of engineers and designers teamed up with Garrett McNamara, son of Lake Worth resident, Laurence McNamara, to make a precise and high-tech surfboard. Garrett is the current Guinness World Record holder for surfing the largest wave ever surfed at Nazaré, Portugal.

Garret was in town here then headed to Puerto Rico with some other local Palm Beach County big wave surfers. They hit it right and caught 10-15 foot solid waves this past week. Good Guy living well!

A surfer broke his record this year. You really can't get anything right.

Garrett became the world champion of big wave surfing at Jaws in Maui where he rode a 70 foot wave. He has been big wave surfing for a long time.
Garrett's Guinness World record for largest wave ever surfed is for a 78 foot wave he rode in Nazare, Portugal in 2011, and it still stands.

He then rode what looked to be a 100 ft wave in January 2013.
This ride was given a two page photo spread in Time in February 2013 and was again featured in late December as one of the photos of the year. He had been interviewed on virtually all significant media outlets after this ride, along with the airing of the breathtaking video, and appeared with Anderson Cooper on 60 Minutes Sports for an 18 minute segment.
They had become friends and Anderson Cooper visited him in Portugal (where Garrett took him out into 25 foot waves on the back of his jet ski),
in N.Y., and in Hawaii.
In November 2013, Carlos Burle rode a wave that looked similar to the one Garrett rode the previous January, but he wiped out before he reached the bottom of the wave.

When is your son visiting Lake Worth? We would all love to see and hear from him. Maybe the local surf shop can host an event?

I'll check with Garrett and the surf shop and see if we can coordinate an event.
