Palm Beach Post responds to the Lake Worth Herald Editorial

Comment Up

The Palm Beach Post comments on Mark Easton's editorial of October 23 in the Lake Worth Herald...which was offensive in more ways than one. I haven't written about it as it was just so shocking and inflammatory.

The part of the editorial that was totally appalling was not so much against Guatemalans as it was against former commissioner Cara Jennings and "company." He suggested that they take up hygiene and culture adaptation. He was offended that anyone would protest the sacred PBSO. He made disgusting snide remarks in general. He made all sorts of assumptions to which he has no knowledge saying that they (Cara Jennings and friends) don't approve of life in a clean, safe society and would prefer communal living and should move out of Lake Worth and leave us all alone. How ridiculous is that? Easton believes they have no right to challenge the PBSO.  Well, why not?  Jack Scarola has.  I am rather certain that he doesn't fit into the "loser" mold of Mr. Easton's.

As far as the Guatemalan Maya Center, I do agree that they should be teaching these immigrants our culture and helping them to assimilate.  Learning English is a requisite to finding a good job.  Actually, obeying the laws in general would be helpful and teaching them how to immigrate legally so that the stigma of being "illegal" can be lifted and we no longer have to be politically correct by calling them "undocumented."

That's the thing. When people think of PBSO protestors, they envision a bunch of lawless folks protesting "good" shootings, immigrant and minority beat-downs, etc. They smugly think that you will never have trouble with a LEO if you aren't doing anything wrong.

All it takes is one to misinterpret what you said, or what you're doing, and your life can be ruined. I'm not talking about shootings here.

As they say, crap floats downhill. If another deputy is present, is he/she going to argue with his/her superior?

The culture of a city is influenced by, an in turn influences its law enforcement, selective code enforcement, etc.

If I ever meet you in person, Lynn, I'll tell you my horror story. I would rather not post it here.

What you're doing and your reasons for it are immaterial. It's what the deputy thinks you're doing ....

It is the mindset of law enforcement officers today. Not only do they have to be extra cautious in everything that they do, but I believe it has become a society where you are guilty...they treat every potential person as a possible bad guy. When you don't know the language, you are especially susceptible to possible harsher treatment...these are the vulnerable. We used to look up to police as our friends. Now I would tell everyone to stand still, hands at you side, do exactly what they tell you, shut up, don't speak unless you are spoken to, etc. Are we becoming a police state? With government policies right now and officials all being politically correct with criminals, terrorists, crossing of our border and the like, it is we, the citizen, that has to be really careful.

One more thing--it is our right under the Constitution to protest any damn thing that we want. For the Press to condemn that is just plain wrong. And there is a time and place for that. This was the right time and the right place.

What has this Commission done to help fight blight in Lake Worth? Under this commission, more low income publicly subsidized rentals have come into our city than ever before. EVER BEFORE !Our district one Commissioner ,Scott Maxwell does not represent our district, he threatens it with his private, behind the scenes agenda. Rather than interacting with the citizens , Maxwell would rather be off playing footsie with other area politicos.Maxwell, Triolo and Amaroso are the people who ran on the platform of single family home ownership ! City council meeting before last, I stood in front of the city and admonished them to do something about the bums and drug addicts ruining our downtown.Commissioner Andy Amaroso was unbelievably rude in his reply to me. But my oh my, how their tunes have suddenly changed ! Even Mayor Pam Triolo told her story of woe involving panhandling bums to the Palm Beach Post! The only reason Easton wrote his hate extravaganza was because it involved Cara Jennings. The idea that Jennings showed up at a recent commission meeting horrified Easton and pals. Cara is Scott Maxwell and companies worst nightmare. A whole P&Z board was thrown down the toilet just to get Jennings off of it.I didn't agree with Cara on every issue ,certainly not illegal immigration, but at least I knew she was honest. Which is a lot more than I can say about Easton and the cronies he bows down to . Katie Mcgiveron

Good advice, Lynn. What you say can and WILL be used against you in a LEO encounter.

I agree that these officers are often in bad positions. It's when they twist the truth and make essentially false reports to cover for any possible actions against them. Why can't they just say, well, I did the best I could based on what I observed instead of inventing things.

My mistake was being too honest in a situation the deputy ither did not want to understand, or did not have the capacity to understand.

Katie, I've worked in delray for 33 years, with 25 of those years being in the downtown area. The homeless problem there is no where near what it used to be, so why were people so incredibly rattled when you pointed that out?

When I tell people I live in LW, they'll , ore often than not, say the downtown is cute but there are just too many weirdos there asking for money.

I guess the Bamboo Room is gone now; I haven't kept up. But shows there were the reason most of the folks that I know came up here.

Can't figure out Easton's problem. He is a tool for this commission and it shows in every editorial he writes. He wants a ballpark at JPP. He wants heights in our downtown even though it was defeated at the polls. He wants them to tax everyone $63 mil for potholes. The list goes on and on. Easton throws all opposition into one seedy group of anarchists. What a damn joke. Easton has no perception of the truth but he still wants to be included at the pow wows at Dave's. He is a news reporter?

To the person who just tried to comment by personally attacking me, kindly read the policy. What you say just shows your ignorance. I am 100% against illegal immigration but Mr. Easton's article was not about that. Basically, it was written to attack Cara Jennings. Sometimes it's how you say something that matters. I have said on so many occasions it it not that I am against PBSO, I am against the loss of control and the never ending exorbitant budget, something we clearly can't afford.

So, take your very nasty disposition somewhere else. Thanks.

Okay gotta say it was pretty righr on though. I liked the facy he did a no hold on political correctness and he was tellin the truth.

@4:27--"right on?" in what respect? He was telling the truth through his eyes, his very narrow eyes, when it comes to Cara Jennings (who was elected twice in this city before she stepped down to run again). She also was endorsed by the PBPost back then. To swipe everyone who disagrees with you politically and lump them all into one undesirable group with one board brush is naive at best.
